Online Reading Tutoring

If your child needs more than additional reading practice, Eyes Up Reading takes a closer look at how they are reading, what skills need support, and whether eye-movement difficulties may also be making reading harder than it needs to be.

Reading Help Should Start by Understanding the Reader

Not every struggling reader struggles for the same reason.

One child may need more help with decoding. Another may read the words but have difficulty understanding or remembering what they read. Another may frequently lose their place, reread lines, skip words, or become tired and frustrated while reading.

That is why Eyes Up Reading starts with a Reading Vision Assessment rather than assuming every reader needs exactly the same kind of tutoring.

We evaluate their reading experience and look at the observable eye-movement patterns so that the next step can be more individualized.

Ten Shocking Statistics Regarding Vision & Reading

Eye-tracking and muscle-coordination can dramatically affect a child's reading experience. What is perceived as a reading issue could be a correctable visual processing issue. (1)

An estimated 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems. (2)

An estimated 60% of struggling readers have unaddressed vision problems. (3)

Vision problems are often mistaken for dyslexia, ADHD, or low motivation. (4)

Seeing clearly (“20/20”) is just one of 15 visual skills critical to academic success. (5)

Reading requires eye-tracking. You need to fix the eye-tracking problems and fix the reading problems. (6)

Vision therapy and reading intervention are usually separate because they target different problems, but they can overlap when a child has both and can be

addressed simultaneously. (7)

Visual processing problems in children can be hereditary, caused by physical trauma, like birth canal pressure or a concussion or injury, or by emotional trauma. (8)

Visual tracking issues must be addressed directly, or they will last your entire life. (9)

The majority of the vision problems that interfere with reading and learning are very treatable, and can be corrected within a couple of months. (10)

Online Reading Tutoring Built Around Your Child

Reading Vision Tutoring is one-on-one and completed online through Zoom.

Your Reading Vision Tutor can individualize instruction based on the areas where your child needs support, including:

Phonics & Decoding
Building the skills needed to recognize, sound out, and read unfamiliar words.

Vocabulary & Comprehension
Helping readers understand what words mean and make sense of what they are reading.

Visual Skills Related to Reading
Tutoring also incorporates exercises intended to improve eye tracking, eye teaming, widen the focal zone, and other visual skills used during reading.

The goal is to understand what may be interfering with reading and provide support that matches the reader.

What Makes Reading Vision Tutoring Different?

Many families searching for an online reading tutor are understandably focused on reading skills—and those skills matter.

But reading also requires the eyes to move accurately across lines of text, maintain their focal point, and coordinate, while the brain processes the words.

When observable eye-movement difficulties are also present, reading instruction alone may not address these additional factors.

Eyes Up Reading's approach combines individualized reading instruction with support for visual skills related to reading.

Start With a Reading Vision Assessment

Before beginning Reading Vision Tutoring, the first step is a Reading Vision Assessment.

The Assessment is completed online through Zoom and takes approximately 15 minutes.

During the Assessment, a Reading Vision Assessment Specialist observes eye-movement patterns during guided visual activities. A short reading portion also helps provide context for the reader's current reading ability.

After the Assessment, you'll continue the Zoom meeting with a Reading Vision Tutor.

Together you'll discuss:

What we observed: We'll explain the reading and eye-movement patterns that were visible during the Assessment.

What may deserve attention: We'll discuss areas where individualized reading instruction or visual-skills support may be appropriate.

Your questions: You'll have an opportunity to ask questions about what you observed and what the next steps could look like.

Whether Reading Vision Tutoring is a good fit: If appropriate, we'll explain how one-on-one tutoring could be structured for your child.

One-on-One Support From Home

Reading Vision Tutoring is delivered online, one-on-one, through Zoom, in 30-minute sessions.

That means your child can work directly with a Reading Vision Tutor without traveling to a tutoring center.

Because the sessions are individual rather than group-based, the Tutor can observe the student as they read, adjust reading instruction, and modify the tutoring activities as the student progresses.

Not Just "More Reading Practice"

When a child struggles with reading, the natural response is often:

“They just need more practice.”

Sometimes additional practice is useful.

But if a reader is struggling with decoding, comprehension, fluency, or visual skills used during reading, simply repeating the same kind of reading practice may not address everything contributing to the difficulty.

Reading Vision Tutoring takes a broader educational approach by considering both reading skills and visual skills related to reading.

The Reading Vision Assessment helps us determine whether that broader approach may be appropriate for your child.

Is Online Reading Tutoring Right for Your Child?

Eyes Up Reading may be worth exploring if you are looking for an online reading tutor because your child:

  • has difficulty learning to read

  • reads below the level you expect

  • struggles with reading comprehension or fluency

  • frequently loses their place or rereads lines

  • tires or becomes frustrated while reading

  • has received reading help before but still seems to be struggling

None of these experiences by themselves establishes the cause of a reading problem.

The purpose of the Assessment is to look more closely before deciding what kind of support makes sense.
