Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if my child’s reading struggles is related to eye-movement issues?

Answer:

Signs can include skipping lines, frequently losing their place, rereading text, avoiding reading, eye fatigue, headaches, becoming tired or frustrated during reading, or reporting that words seem difficult to follow. A Reading Vision Assessment can help identify whether eye-movement patterns may be contributing to the reading struggles.

2. How do eye-tracking problems affect reading?

Answer:

Reading requires the eyes to work together and move smoothly across a page. When eye tracking or eye teaming is difficult, a reader may skip lines, lose their place, reread words, experience visual fatigue, or find reading unusually difficult. Eyes Up Reading works on these visual skills alongside reading instruction.

3. What happens during a Reading Vision Assessment?

Answer:

The Reading Vision Assessment is a 15-minute observational Assessment with Dr. McMurray and/or a Reading Vision Assessment Specialist, conducted online through Zoom. They observe eye-movement patterns while you or your child reads. The assessment is followed by a consultation with a Certified Reading Vision Coach to discuss the findings and possible next steps.

4. Is Reading Vision Coaching the same as Clinical Vision Therapy?

Answer:

No. Clinical Vision Therapy primarily focuses on medical-level eye disorders, without addressing the reading element. Treatment often includes surgery and/or particular eye-exercises specific to the diagnosed eye-disorder.

On the other hand, Eyes Up Reading's Reading Vision Coaching curriculum helps with sub-clinical eye-movement issues that can be addressed without surgery, by using a unique set of eye exercises that coincide with the eye movements required for effective reading. The eye exercises are not particular to any specific eye-disorder.

Eyes Up Reading provides reading intervention plus support for visual skills related to reading, rather than clinical diagnosis or optometric vision therapy. Eyes Up Reading does not treat diagnosed visual disorders, strabismus, amblyopia, dyslexia, ADHD, or learning disabilities. When a medical-grade eye disorder is suspected, the company recommends consulting a licensed specialist.

5. What is Reading Vision Coaching?

Answer:

Reading Vision Coaching is Eyes Up Reading’s breakthrough curriculum that combines visual-skill exercises with personalized one-on-one reading instruction. The curriculum improves eye teaming and eye tracking while simultaneously developing important reading skills such as phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

6. Is Eyes Up Reading a traditional reading tutoring program?

Answer:

No. Eyes Up Reading's Reading Vision Coaching curriculum combines reading instruction with visual-skills support. In addition to working on areas such as phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, the program incorporates unique exercises designed to support eye teaming and tracking. An estimated 60% of struggling readers have unaddressed vision problems. Most reading tutors are not trained to spot them and don't have the skills to address them and their impact on reading.

7. How much does Eyes Up Reading cost?

Answer:

The Reading Vision Assessment is just $125

Ongoing 30-minute Reading Vision Coaching Sessions are just $59 per session for adults ages 18+, and only $39 per session for children and youth ages 4–17.

Your Certified Reading Vision Coach will conduct follow-on Reading Vision Assessments to track progress during the coaching program, as part of the coaching sessions, without any additional charge.

In addition to the cost for the sessions, we ask all new clients to purchase a Training Kit. Included in the kit are

  • all the custom-built tools you will need for the eye exercises,

  • a collection of custom-built buttons which serve as prizes as your child passes each level in our program,

  • a custom lanyard to hold all the award buttons,

  • printed eye-exercise instructions

  • a 100 eye-exercise challenge.

The Training Kit is $45. However, if there are two siblings going through our Reading Vision program at the same time, then instead of paying for 2 separate kits for $90, we can combine the two sets into the same kit for just $70.

8. How often are the coaching sessions?

Answer:

The standard 1:1 coaching sessions are 30-minutes long and take place twice a week through Zoom. Coaches monitor progress and can adjust the eye exercises and reading instruction based on the student's needs.

9. How long does it take to see improvement?

Answer:

Progress varies from person to person. Eyes Up Reading reports that some students begin noticing changes in as little as 30 days, while many children participate for approximately six months. Adults usually only require around six to eight weeks. Individual results will vary.

10. Does Eyes Up Reading work with teenagers and adults, too?

Answer:

Yes. Eyes Up Reading works with children as well as teens, college students, and adults. The Reading Vision Coaching system was actually pioneered on college students. Vision problems are life-long unless they are properly addressed. They can be hereditary or the result of physical or emotional trauma. Clients range from young children to adults in their 70s. Sometimes, grandparents act a patrons for multiple generations of their descendants to fix their visual skill issues once and for all.
